DESCRIPTION
When I analyzed kayak.com, I didn’t see any kayaks, so I tried to see if I could make sense of the name as a metaphor. It was clear from the features above the fold that it was a website for traveling. In particular, I could see some drop-down menus to search for flights. I don’t love the domain name fit, but I can see how as a metaphor it can be related to travel. My first thought was that I liked comparing hundreds of flight prices because it seemed like a potentially wise way to find the best deals and keep the airlines honest. I liked that there was a small map partly above the fold that could be clicked and expanded. I recommend making it more obvious to users that the map can be clicked and expanded because I don’t think many users would assume that would be possible. When I was on the dedicated map page with a large map, there were thumbnails for locations below the fold, which acted as a chance to explore different destinations. I recommend having some of these destination thumbnails on the homepage to help increase user engagement and give users a better understanding of the best content the site has to offer. To me, these destination thumbnails were the best part.
