What Is BitTorrent?
BitTorrent (BitTorrent.com) is a torrent client that allows you to download torrents onto your computer. BitTorrent has a sister site, uTorrent, another popular torrent client. BitTorrent is also a website where you can download the BitTorrent client. And once you visit a site that offers the torrent or magnet link, the client will automatically open and start downloading the torrent file. As of December 2022, the website Bittorrent.com gets an estimated 2.5 million monthly views, according to SimilarWeb. However, that figure does not display the popularity of the torrent client which has already been downloaded many millions of times. The Wayback Machine estimates that Bittorrent.com was founded on July 18, 2002.
Is BitTorrent Safe?
I analyzed bittorrent.com for malware and malicious content to check if it was legit or a scam. Here are the results:
Website:
I checked the site BitTorrent.com on an online malware scanner Sucuri and it returned with no issues. You can see the same here: Sucuri scan for the site BitTorrent.com.

To check this further I ran a parasite scan with Unmask Parasites on the site BitTorrent.com and it says the page is clean. You can see the same here: Unmask Parasites scan for the site BitTorrent.com.
Lastly, I ran an online malware scan with VirusTotal for the domain BitTorrent.com and the scan detected at least 10 files that are communicating with the domain and no security vendor flagged the domain as malicious. You can see the same here: VirusTotal scan for the site BitTorrent.com.
Torrent Client:
The BitTorrent torrent client is safe to use. There is no way to run it through a malware scanner; however, you can run a malware scan on your computer after downloading it. I did that with a full scan with Microsoft Defender on Windows 11 and the torrent client is not detected as malware. I scanned the computer again with Malwarebytes and Spybot – Search & Destroy and neither of them considered the BitTorrent torrent client to be malware.
The BitTorrent torrent client displays one banner advertisement. I have tested these ads as much as possible by clicking on them and then checking if my computer’s hard drive or browser had malware afterward. There was no malware detected in the browser or hard drive.
In conclusion, BitTorrent (the website BitTorrent.com and the torrent client) is safe to use. We didn’t detect any malware during our scans. And the online malware scanner says BitTorrent.com is a low security risk with no malware and it hasn’t been blacklisted by any security vendors. Overall grade: Safe.
