This past week we saw the release of the HTC One X and HTC One S in selected countries, two fantastic little devices which, although trail some distance behind more popular brands such as Samsung and Apple, are still regarded as powerful tools which have provided somewhat of a rebirth for the Taiwanese manufacturing company.

HTC at one stage was a major player dominating its rivals in the Smartphone manufacturing industry. This is no longer the case, however, with HTC releasing Smartphone after Smartphone trying to compete in a demanding market. It seems this has changed, though, with the release of the HTC One series, HTC looks like they’re keeping it simple and focusing on the quality of the handsets and not quantity they can turn out. With its good 5 mega-pixel camera, sleek industrial design and better than average battery life the STC One series come with a sleuth of improvements on their predecessor the HTC Sense 4.0. And for those of you that got your hands on one of the new HTC One X’s we have good news. Root access has been gained by the Android community and we have the step by step guide below.

Rooting the HTC One X

Note: When you have completed the tutorial, to be on the safe side you have the option to check if it worked. You can look for SuperSU in your app drawer, then try downloading a root only app to test it out.

1. First, you will need to head to HTCDev.com which you can do by clicking here. You need to unlock the boot loader of your HTC One X by following the instructions on this site. Download the full Android SDK from the website here and complete the setup.

2. You will need to download the following:

  • Interim ClockworkMod (CWM) Touch Recovery HERE. As soon as you have gotten it you then must transfer tofastboot folder within the Android SDK folder on your PC.
  • CWM-Flashable version of SuperSU HERE. This file should be put under /SD card on the mobile.

3. Turn off your device, once off you need to hold down the Volume Down and Power button at the same time until it boots into recovery.

4. You need to open up a Terminal App and enter the following command

fastboot flash recovery r1-modaco-recovery-clockwork-touch-endeavor. img

You will now have ClockWorkMod Touch flashed to your device.

5. Restart your HTC One X. You will need to shut it down again, then, following the same steps as before, boot into ClockWorkMod Recovery. Once you have finished that it is a good idea to take a Nandroid backup now.

6. Now it;’s time to load the file which we put on the card and shift it over to the mobile.

Go to Install zip from SD card > choose a zip from SD card, then select the SuperSU .zip file which you downloaded in Step 2. When complete it’s time to head back at the first screen where you should then select the reboot system now option.

Your HTC One X should now boot into stock ROM with ROOT access if you have followed the steps correctly. If you want to check you can look for SuperSU in your app drawer, then try downloading a root only app to test it out.
