If you’re one of the many people who just picked up an iPhone 5 and is looking to transfer the data across from the old iPhone to the new iPhone 5 but doesn’t know how to do it this is the guide for you.

There are two ways to get this done – either via iCloud or iTunes. I have already covered how to do it via iCloud here if you prefer that way you can follow that guide. This guide is how to do it via iTunes. There’s no real right or wrong way, many prefer to do it via iCloud because it’s marginally easier, but the downside is how well do you trust iCloud? The iTunes method is also recommended if you don’t have quick internet speeds or if your backup is larger than the room in your iCloud storage.

Here’s what you need to transfer the date from an old iPhone over to the new iPhone 5 smartphone, so you’ve got all the same files across devices, by using Apple’s iTunes from a computer.

How To Transfer Data From Old iPhone To New iPhone 5 Using iTunes

1. Grab your old iPhone and connect it to the computer with the USB cable that comes with it. Once connected start up iTunes;

2. In the left sidebar right click on your iPhone – under devices select “Back Up.” It will now start backing up your device;

3. Wait until it finishes backing up completely. Once it’s finished disconnect your device from the computer;

4. Grab your new iPhone and turn it on. Follow the on-screen instructions to set it up;

Please Note: if you have already started up your new iPhone previously you need to restore factory settings. That will then allow you to see the on-screen instructions again.

5. Once done select “Restore from iTunes Backup,” and then tap Next;

6. Connect the new iPhone 5 to the computer with the USB cable that comes with it;

7. Inside iTunes select the most recent backup from the Restore drop down menu and then click continue;

8. It will now restore. When it is finished the iPhone will reboot itself, this is normal. Your new iPhone will now have all of the data transferred over from the old iPhone.

You should now find that your iPhone 5 now has all the data shifted over from the older iPhone that you used to own. If you followed the guide and it did not transfer the data like it should have done, leave a comment, and we can help you find out why that might be. For everyone else, you might want to take your first backup on the new iPhone 5 smartphone so that you can now have that data backup up on the new iPhone os you don’t need to follow the guide again That also allows you to do things like sell the older iPhone and make some money back from it. There are plenty of people out there who cannot afford to own the iPhone 5 and are willing to buy your older device.
