Not long ago an official firmware update rolled out for the Note 10.1 N800. The new jelly bean was the 4.1.2 XXCMD2 version. If you have upgraded to this and are now looking to customize your tablet by gaining root access then here is the guide.

You will need an unlocked boot-loader and for it to be factory unlocked, not just unlocked to a carrier.

Note 10.1 teaser

It is a good idea to have some Modding experience under your belt before you try one of these guides. They do need some knowledge and key understanding. It wouldn’t be such a big deal if it wasn’t accompanied with such a big risk factor, but it is. If you were to do something wrong here it does carry a high risk. There’s a chance you can brick your phone which is basically as bad as it gets. Being a Samsung product, there is generally solutions and workaround for this. Still, it’s something we don’t have available here for you to look at so we cannot confirm nor deny any guide for that current. If you don’t want to take the risk without knowing it exists, then take a look around by searching Google for what you need.

Details of Note

  • Check that it is the N800 model that you have in your hands and not any of the others. All devices come with a range and just because your’s is the 10.1 doesn’t necessarily mean you have the right one.
  • As long as you are fully aware of everything we have mentioned above, it’s time for you to move to the guide. If anything does go wrong for you then you always have the option to do a factory rest of your tablet. Don’t try to sue us because something went wrong because we will not be held responsible for what was ultimately your own actions and not ours.
  • Did you know that CWM recovery and TWRP recovery can be downloaded from the Google Play store now. Don’t forget to check out the CyanogenMod installer which makes things even easier than ever before. They only brought this out to the market a couple of weeks ago. Not long after they became an official company.
  • Make sure you stop over at the Developer Options menu and enable USB Debugging Mode before going further. In addition, ensure the USB Drivers are up to date and its perfect working order. Without both of those two things we cannot make a successful connection between machines and the process will fail.
  • This is official stock software issued by the Samsung team and given the all clear but the phone carriers. Installing official firmware does not result in voiding the manufacturers warranty. Therefore you can send the smartphone or tablet away for repairs if something goes wrong. However, if you were to apply root access and unchain the operating system over the top of this patch, that will void any remaining warranty you once had. You can make the warranty, useful again by reverting back to the stock build.
  • Odin is a tool made by Samsung that is commonly used for flashing files. We are using it here again today for unchaining the OS. You should understand that Odin only works in conjunction with Windows PCs and will not work for Mac OS X or Ubuntu computers. Find a friend that has Windows ranging from XP to Windows 8 if you cannot find one yourself elsewhere. In addition, you can use notebooks and laptops as long as they have the USB slot in the side so we can connect the tablet.

How to root the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 running Android 4.1.2 XXCMD2 Jelly Bean

1. Get your hands on the CF Auto root package for the Note 10.1 N8000. Also grab the Odin 3.07. You find inside two different big files. One will be the CF-Auto root and the other will be the tar.md5 file. They have long extensions on them. This is a good thing because they are what you want to be seeing.

2. Extract the files followed by turning it off like you normally would by holding the power button.

3. Put the phone into download mode.
– Press and hold the Volume Down + Power + Home keys at the same time to activate.

4. Launch Odin, ensuring admin permissions. Make sure an added message appears, or a port turning yellow. If not, try again. You might need to download the USB drivers.

5. Put the speedmod-kernel-s2-jb-k5-3-Odin.tar file and check the box in the PDA tab inside Odin.

6. Click start.

7. Wait for the reboot.

8. Stop the USB mass Storage device from the Windows system tray.
