As a person who grew up only knowing and using a Windows operating system who then went to study a ‘Microsoft only’ course, it’s fair to say I hold the Windows phone close to the heart, especially since starting up a mobile blog. But there’s no denying they were behind the eight-ball since the beginning of bringing out the Nokia Lumia. For starters, they were late on the scene which was already so far advanced people didn’t know them as Smartphones, they knew them as iPhones. Having said that, I was comfortable in knowing that the Windows phone would gradually creep into the game.
So far so good, as that mostly has come true. Each year after year Microsoft manage to produce a Windows Phone which has cleverly outperformed the last, and slowly but surely, closed the gap between them and the competition. So what’s it going to take for them to get ahead? This could be it.
As I mentioned before, the norm for Windows Phone has been playing catch up. What they really needed was a new idea. To work on something which the others don’t yet have and they just might have finally done it. The feature I’m talking about is a 41 megapixel camera.
Why do that, you ask? When you think of a smart phone, the thought (whether bitter or sweet) of a photo being snapped is never far behind. It’s just such a common aspect of a mobile these days and that makes it a great target. To put into perspective just how much a 41 MP cam is, that’s like multiplying the iPhone I have in my pocket now by over x5 in power. This is the performance the Nokia Lumia 1020 is capable of, which is also heading our way in just a few days time.
The release of the Lumia 1020 is on the 26th of July, which is roughly four days time depending on what part of the world you are from. This will effectively put them ahead of the game for one of the most important features on a mobile phone — the camera. That’s put them closer to their goal in my book, which would be to lead the way overall.
The downside? I normally like the look of the Windows Phone. It’s squarish looks were different to the rest of the pack when it first came in, but yet it had style. It still has that same kind of look from the front, however, if you turn it around where this magnificent camera is, it’s kind of ugly. Whether they tried to make the camera stand out more because it is no doubt the new focal point, or what I’m not sure, but I’m not a huge fan of how it looks.
No matter what I happen to think of it, the world seems to have taken a swift liking to the new phone. AT&T has released a statement stating that the Lumia 1020 has already sold out from their orders. There is no word of yet about the other carriers, but if that is anything to go by, you might want to hurry and order yours if you plan on getting one.
