With over ten big named handsets, HTC have developed a name for themselves among the elite inside of the Smartphone industry. They also do a good job at entertaining the entry-level side of things too. The company has been in the news a lot lately with CEO Peter Chou stepping away, but if you didn’t pay close attention to the headlines you wouldn’t know any different. On a personal level, I’m hoping HTC come up with something great on the wearable tech side of things. They have stated that they will be entering this market come 2014, around the same time as we are expecting a watch from Apple. For now, it’s time to stick with what they know and love in handsets and change them to the best of our abilities.

It wasn’t long ago that HTC was always in the news about being under threat of folding. Then there was talk of Lenovo trying to buy them out. For now it seems as though they have steadied the ship and here’s to hoping they have many more years to come.

HTC Butterfly

Details of Note

  • In order to get this done, you will of course be wanting to use a Windows-based PC. The reason being is because the tool that we use to upload the files will be done as software only compatible with the Redmond goods.
  • You will be needing to run the least in terms of the Android operating system. Anything under 2.3 which is gingerbread should be upgraded to this at a minimum. This will make sure a smooth process and a bug free time. If you need to check what your device is going to Settings > About Phone and that should send you to a screen that lets you look at a tab called software. In here look for the number to match up with what I said. It may not mention any name, but that’s OK because we can tell from the number alone what it’s doing. Moreover, if it did happen to register as a number under then you want to search around for an update guide. There’s a good chance that it’s possible for you to be running on a firmware higher than you are.
  • Rooting always voids the manufacturers warranty and it will not come back unless you flash stock software over the to again. Also note that standard over the air updates will no longer arrive as a notification. You will need to install the stock firmware files manually instead. Once you are back on stock, any future updates will roll out OTA once more.
  • Give your HTC Butterfly adequate battery life before going ahead with this. You want to have as much as possible to avoid it shutting down during the process. If the phone does shut down it can cause major problems and even bricking of the mobile.
  • This mobile phone is really easy to root. All you need to do is a few simple steps. It is often the case that the lower and middle range devices are like this. Whether it is coincidence or not, nobody is exactly sure, but as it now stands, it is what it is.
  • Take a full backup of the operating system and everything you have installed since opening the smartphone out of the box. Make copies using Helium, Titanium or SMS backup. if you do not have the OS unchained already the Helium application is a great way to store data, sync the market apps and the phone contacts. However, if you want to make copies of all those messages you have sent try using the SMS backup app instead.
  • Prerequisites:

– Unlocked bootloader.

– TWRP recovery.

Rooting the HTC Butterfly

1. Download the su_buzyb0x.zip.

2. It’s now time to make a connection for the HTC butterfly to the computer. We do this using the USB cable.

You may wish to take a moment to back up the Butterfly so that you don’t lose any information. If things go well it will not be automatically wiped. It’s more if things were to go wrong that we choose to do this. Having said that, backing up should always be a priority to say the least and the sooner you get accustomed to doing this the better it will be for you in the long run.

3. All you need to do now is switch it over the to SD card.

4. Boot it up in TWRP recovery.

We are using TWRP recovery today because it is the personal choice for this particular guide. With it everything becomes easier. There’s often more ways than one to do this, though, so if you hear of somebody else using another type of custom recovery that may well have been the case for them.

5. Navigate your way over to install and then simply upload the zip file from step 1.

6. Flash the file as you normally would. Lastly, it will need to be rebooted before it kicks in and takes effect.

Install the Root Checker application accessible from the Google Play Store here.
