Helped by the popular Chromebook computers, Chromium OS is gaining in popularity as an operating system that can be used on computers with lighter hardware. Often used in schools, Chromium OS is ideal for running web applications and browsing the World Wide Web.
Note that there is a difference between Chrome OS and Chromium OS. Both Chrome OS and Chromium OS are based on the Linux kernel, but where Chrome OS uses the Google Chrome web browser, Chromium OS uses the Chromium web browser. Chromium is most easily understood as the foundation to what many “Chrome” products are then developed on top of, but Chromium always remains a free and open-source operating system and browser rather than it being controlled by Google or any other proprietary software.
