DESCRIPTION
The homepage was in Chinese and I had to translate it into English with Chrome. The top menu lets me choose a movie or TV show and check for rankings/ratings. There was also a movie review section. Immediately I was impressed with the depth in which movie.douban.com was trying to cover all on one domain as usually I would have to browse separate sites for watching shows and reading reviews on them. I checked the reviews section to inspect the quality of the reviews. The reviews were left by watchers of the movies and not professionals associated with movie.douban.com. I found the reviews to be helpful and filled with what to watch for etc. However, I did not spend time confirming whether the tips were accurate. Interestingly, other people could leave comments on the user reviews, so it was an open-ended discussion. This is different from most other movie review sites. IMDB does not allow you to reply to a user-generated review; you may only upvote them if you find them useful. I clicked on some movies from the homepage to check their quality. There were no links directly to watch the movies/TV shows on movie.douban.com. The links were available but pointed to other domains such as Mango TV. I was expecting the movies to be on movie.douban.com not only due to the name of the site but because the homepage suggested I would be watching the movies after clicking the movie thumbnail covers with headings such as “Now showing” and “Latest popular movies.”
