This device is a fantastic little smartphone for those users who still prefer the physical keyboard and aren’t wanting to spend a fortune. It offers many of the same features as its touch only sibling the HTC Evo 4G and has a sleek design making it a very popular choice for lower priced handsets.

You will also need to have USB debugging mode enabled in order to complete this guide. This helps to connect your Android phone with the PC.

You will need to make sure you have the HTC USB drivers. This is necessary for when you connect the device to the computer. You have to connect it to the computer in order to root the device.

Please note, this method is for Windows users, you will need to use a PC running Windows XP or  Windows 7. You also need to have ADB (Android Debug Bridge) set up for this method to be successful.

Rooting the HTC Evo Shift 4G & Flash ClockworkMod Recovery

Step 1. First of all you will need to download the Shift Root & Recovery file HERE.

Step 2. You need to extract the ShiftRR.rar onto your desktop from the file downloaded in step 1.

Step 3. Double click on the ShiftRR.exe folder from the folder on your desktop to run the tool.

Step 4. On your device, enable USB debugging. This can be done by going to ‘Settings’then selecting ‘Applications’ then ‘USB Debugging’. Then simply check the tickbox located next to it.

Step 5. Next connect your device to your (Windows) PC via USB. In the application window a message will appear at the bottom which reads ‘HTC Shift Found!’.

Step 6. Click on the ‘Root’ button.

Step 7. A dialog box will appear from the tool and ask: ‘Does Phone Have ENG HBoot Installed’. You will need to press ‘No’ to install. (Press ‘Yes’ if you already have it installed).

Step 8. If you clicked ‘No’ in the previous step the tool will let you know when the HBoot has been installed via a pop up. Click ‘OK’.

Step 9. Your device will reboot and the home screen will be displayed. Once done click on the ‘Root’ button again and this time select the ‘Yes’ option when prompted by the HBoot pop up.

Step 10. Let the tool run. A message will flash when the process is complete saying ‘Root Success’.

Step 11. Now you will need to reboot your device.

Step 12. Once back on the home screen you will need to select ‘Check Root’ then press ‘Accept’ or ‘Allow’.

You have now rooted your HTC Ergo Shift 4G. To flash ClockworkMod continue below.

Step 13. Again you will need to ensure that ‘USB Debugging’ is enabled on your device. The connect it to your PC via USB and make sure it is on the Home screen.

Step 14. Launch and run the ShiftRR .exe tool that you saved to your desktop in step 2.

Step 15. You need to select the ‘Browse’ button from the Recovery section. Then locate the shift_clockwork_recovery.img from the previously extracted ShiftRR/recovery folder and click ‘Install’.

Your device will automatically reboot directly to ClockworkMod Recovery once the process is complete.
