The Qualcomm Toq is in the midst of receiving a handy update to bring in the stopwatch feature as well as support for the SDK v 1.5 that hasn’t come out yet but is due shortly. The update namely 1.5.5_14602 cannot be accessed unless you have already download and installed the app available from The Google Play store here.
The watch hasn’t been a huge hit to date and part of that comes at its price that many are calling high. I never viewed it that way and when compared to a standard watch that does nothing but tick over the seconds I’ve always thought they were reasonably priced to be in the same ballpark, but the consensus is different. If they can lower the price before the onslaught of competition comes in thick and fast later this year, it can hopefully survive because we love the name.
When it comes to remembering watches before the smart watch era that we are in now, there were two main features a watch had. The first is telling the time, so you knew what hour of the day you were in if nothing else and the second was a stopwatch. In fact, stopwatches were so cool when I was growing up in the 90’s that they even had their own dedicated device that was practiced by my sibling and me for amusement and trying to stop the second ticking over exactly on the number without a decimal place. Those were the days and if you can imagine a better reason to want one such as timing yourself when running then you will love this feature they have added here.
Smart watches still haven’t bloomed to the potential we had expected them too although the new Android wear campaign and the iWatch set to come out later this year should fix all that. In terms of getting to know Qualcomm better, the Toq started with a pre-order price of $349.99 and during CES of this year they knocked $50 off that price as a promotion. It will be a model to buy until towards the end of 2014 when they are tipped t bring out the next model if it does go ahead but at this point there are no guarantees. If you thought you knew the name, it is because they are famous for coming up with the Snapdragon system chips that people find in their Android hardware.
This update also comes complete with conversation history enhancements, usage logs and more. It launched today, June 17, and carried the size of 12 MB. More than 10,000 people have installed this upgrade already, and we are expecting many more flurrying in over the next week. It does require Android 4.03 Ice Cream Sandwich and up for it to work.
