Last month we heard whispers around that Google intended on taking away their messaging service all together and replacing it with the Google+ hangouts section. Today, after the release of Android 4.4 that is one of the changes they have made. We can now kiss the old messages goodbye completely.
If you’re not familiar with hangouts just yet, they are a part of the Google+ social media site. Many people use them as a place to congregate, and it gives them a chance to connect via video conferencing and not just sending instant messenger texts.
You’re probably asking does that mean I have to video call now instead of sending a simple text message? The answer to that question would be no. Google has updated the hangouts to version 2.0 and along with it will be the option to send SMS and MMS just like you normally would, only this time it will come through using the hangouts app instead.
It looks like Google plan on using their own social networking service and its features for their services from here on in.
