LG has never been the biggest name in the Smartphone industry, despite its recent boom in the smart TV sector and going as far as striking a partnership deal with Google TV. They have had some success in recent years, however, with smartphones like the LG G2 which is the top of the range flagship that took on some of the best mobile phones in the world and didn’t do a bad job at it either. That is about as far as the range went that we knew of until we found out about the L series. The current L series III offers some low-end products equipped with the latest software (Android 4.4 KitKat) and Dual SIMs.
We recently told news about Metro PCS distributing the L70 and the L90 going to T-Mobile. Now the LG L80, which comes in between the two of them in terms of specs, is here to tackle the Asian market and in particular Indonesia as of today.
The new L80 has a 5-inch display with a screen resolution of 400 X 800 and an 187 ppi pixel density. The display size is big and offers just under what the current flagship smartphones are like the HTC One M8, the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the rumored iPhone 6 coming later this year. We like that idea too because we see this being the direction handsets will go in. Originally people did not warm to the idea of having a bulky object in their pants and they just wanted the screens small. Nowadays, however, we use our devices for apps, video, web browsing and these features translate into a good screen resolution becoming only an asset on a large display. That is where this L80 lets itself down, though, because it only has a low resolution that isn’t anywhere near today’s standard. Like much of the L series III, this mobile has a dual-core 1.2GHz processor and 1GB of RAM. Storage space hurts with only 4 GB of internal memory. There are memory card options that can be bought for external memory, such as a MicroSD card to help give some extra space. That is exactly how the big name brands still do it today, such as the Samsung galaxy S5, but they start with more internal space on offer. It is also a Dual SIM device which makes it handy for people who need to use two SIM cards. Colour options may be restricted to the black and white variants like we see the picture above shows.
To close, I’ve mentioned lots of positives and lots of negative that defies the purpose of having the positives in the first place. A dual core processor, for example, is a great feature, but pairing it with only 1 GB RAM is going to take away from that performance. It has a big display, which is high, but low resolution. The quality of the display was a huge part of the reason other manufacturers are making the bigger screens. For the price you are paying, it is not all gimmicks here though. The bigger size and the specs it has turn out to be good money. It is good to see the market expanding and create more smartphones that suit the users specific needs and that is what we have here and not gimmicks.
