If you just want to apply a factory reset and wipe the data, you can do that from a stock recovery. If you want to upload zip files for getting root access with SuperSU or install custom ROMs, you do that from a custom recovery. There are three main custom recovery types and two of those are similar. Philz touch is the touch version of CWM recovery. The third custom recovery and often refereed to as the most popular recovery is the TWRP recovery.

With TWRP, we can do all the same things we can with CWM, only with a touch-based user interface. That means you do not use the Volume key to scroll down the list and the Power key to confirm commands. Instead you tap the display of the device you are using with the buttons that are on the screen.  Apart from the delivery, there isn’t much difference. The wording can slightly vary, but the options are the same from whatever custom recovery you choose to install on your device.
