The Droid range products from Maxx, Mini and Ultra are currently sitting on Android 4.4.2 Kitkat instead of being fitted the fresher Android 4.4.3. That left many owners annoyed with the lack of timely updates, but the Motorola company announced plans to go straight over to Android 4.4.4, just one stop before the Android L where things get really serious and we see many more features coming our way.

In all honesty there’s not much happening between Android 4.4.2 and 4.4.4 firmware versions anyway. The build that currently stands brought in the keyboard optimizations, Bluetooth improvements, wireless printing support and full-screen immersive KitKat mode. Moreover, there’s white status bar cons, new SMS default application as Hangouts, lock screen camera app access, Easter Eggs, Emoji, landscape board improvements and much more.

The firmware that Motorola decides to skip came with a redesigned Phone Dialer app, a card-based interface, new color scheme with the dialer, bug fixes and not much else.

From there the latest Android 4.4.4 comes with arguably even less importance. It has a fix in place for a security flaw found in the Android 4.4.3 KitKat and patches the OpenSSL bug. In addition to this there is also minor security improvements, visual voicemail enhancements, camera performance just to name a few.

If you put the two of those together, then there is something worth mentioning and that looks like what Motorola are doing. Furthermore, it’s possible they are high on security and somebody high up made the executive decision to wait for the software that fixed the known vulnerabilities so from that perspective it’s hard to argue about missing the last software update.

If you are already partaking in the Motorola Feedback Network you will start to see this welcomed addition arriving OTA. Those not signed up to the network and are wishing to do so can at any time. However, if your sole purpose is to get this update quicker I wouldn’t bother. People without an account can begin seeing this arrive as a system notification alerting them as soon as next week.
