The most popular Samsung smartphones, tablets and phablets will always have some custom ROMs available to install. Device owners love to install custom recoveries due to their ability to create and restore device backups. The other power a custom recovery possesses is the ability to install custom ROMs. Once you upload your new ROM zip file to the custom recovery on your Samsung Galaxy Note 2 device, you can run aftermarket firmware which is completely unprecedented on your device. Some custom ROMS appear nothing like what the Android developers gave to you in the stock ROM, while others can purposefully stick close to the stock Android but give what they consider to be better features and better ROMs. The most popular custom ROM in the world, CyanogenMod, is a great example of the latter.
