What Is Mega.nz?

Mega.nz is a cloud storage website, where you can create an account and then upload files to be safely and privately stored in the cloud. You can share these files if you like or keep them private. And the files can be anything from text files to videos. Mega.nz also comes with a built-in video player so your video files stored in the cloud can be played directly from the website without you having to download them.

Is Mega.nz Safe?

I conducted a series of malware tests to find out if mega.nz is safe and legit. Here are the results:

I installed the Malwarebytes Browser Guard on my Edge browser and was able to browse the site mega.nz without any issues.

To check this further I ran malware scans with Malwarebytes and Spybot on my computer after browsing the site mega.nz and they returned no malware detection. I also ran a system-wide scan with Microsoft Defender and no malware was found.

To try to confirm that the site is clean, I also checked the site mega.nz on the online malware scanner Sucuri and it returned with no issues. You can see the same here: https://sitecheck.sucuri.net/results/mega.nz

Mega.nz Sucuri results

Sucuri says the site mega.nz is a low security risk and doesn’t have any malware. It also says that no associated security vendors have blacklisted the site mega.nz.

Some improvements could be made such as adding a website firewall and solving the missing security headers listed below:

Missing security header for ClickJacking Protection. Alternatively, you can use Content-Security-Policy: frame-ancestors ‘none’. Affected pages:
http://mega.nz/404javascript.js

Missing security header to prevent Content Type sniffing.

Missing Content-Security-Policy directive. We recommend to add the following CSP directives (you can use default-src if all values are the same): base-uri

Lastly, I ran a malware scan with VirusTotal on the domain mega.nz and one security vendor has flagged the domain as malicious. You can see the same here: https://www.virustotal.com/gui/domain/mega.nz

Mega.nz VirusTotal results

It’s never good when a security vendor flags a domain as malicious, but in this instance, I can see it’s only 1 out of 88 security vendors who think the site mega.nz is malicious which means the 1 flag is likely to be a false positive and not an issue.

In conclusion, the site mega.nz is a low security risk and doesn’t have malware according to Sucuri. Sucuri also said none of its associated security vendors have blacklisted the site mega.nz, meaning they don’t think the site is malicious. The VirusTotal scan did show one security vendor that had flagged the domain as malicious but 1 out of 88 vendors is likely a false positive and not a real threat. Given everything that I have researched, the site mega.nz is safe.
