With the device having recently received its official update to Android 4.0.4 ICS, we have the detailed guide below which will have your freshly updated Ericsson Xperia Ray liberated and performing at its optimum in no time. We must thank the exceptional team over at XDA Developers for all their hard work and engineering this method, in particular developers jjdoctor and Flying.
Notes:
- You will also need to have USB debugging mode enabled in order to complete this guide. This helps to connect your Android phone with the PC.
- You will need to make sure you have the Sony USB drivers. This is necessary when you connect the device to the computer. You have to connect it to the computer to root the device.
- As with all tutorials please ensure you back up your device before you began and proceed at your own risk. Mobicuppa will not take responsibility for any damage to your device or loss of data that may occur during the guide.
Note: This guide is for the Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray running Android 4.0.4 ICS only.
Rooting the Sony Xperia Ray & Install ClockworkMod Recovery
Step 1. You will need to download the following file in order to root Sony Xperia Ray:
Step 2. Once downloaded and stored somewhere easy to find such as your desktop, you will need to ensure USB debugging is turned on, on your device. To achieve this simply navigate through the following: ‘Setting’ > ‘Developer Options’ > ‘USB Debugging’. If not already, you will need to tick the check box.
Step 3. You will also need to ensure that you are able to install apps from unknown sources. To check this navigate to: ‘Setting’ > ‘Security’ > ‘Unknown Sources’. Again, if it is not ticked, tap it to place a tick in the check box.
Step 4. Now, using the USB cable connect your device to your PC.
Step 5. Locate the root-exploit folder you downloaded in step 1 and extract it.
Step 6. Once extracted find the RunMe.bat and double-click it to begin rooting. Your device will reboot a few times before the root is complete.
Step 7. Now that your device is rooted we can continue and install ClockworkMod Recovery. Start by downloading and installing the following from Google Play:
Step 8. Once installed, open the app and navigate to: ‘Installs tab’ > ‘Install CWM’.
Step 9. You will be presented with some on-screen instructions to follow which will have your device flashed with CWM in no time.
