The European variant of the LG G3 is choosing to leave behind the 5.0.1 and roll out the original Android 5.0 Lollipop software update. The staged roll out started during the last 24 hours and will continue to find people’s notification panels over the next few weeks. All people in Europe will find the system notification arriving automatically without them having to lift a finger. From there they can choose to tap “download,” followed by “install now” or decline the software for later. Those preferring to put it on hold can navigate to Settings > General > About phone > Software update > Check for software update.

The new Android 5.0 Lollipop OTA update comes with the build number LRX21R. That’s the code you’ll see from the “About Phone” section after your download is complete. There is no official change-log provided for users.

LG G3 Lollipop

Android 5.0 Lollipop comes with many fantastic features making it outshine the earlier KitKat. Inside you will find new material design, a material design app drawer, enhanced battery life, a new 5.0 camera, tap and go for NFC pairing, extra Google security with Knox, root access becoming more difficult, smart notification with a do not disturb feature and more. Don’t forget to check out the Lollipop Easter Egg that is a blatant rip-off of Flappy Bird, set up trusted Bluetooth devices, revamped face lock, screen pinning, interactive notification on the lock screen, priority notification mode, guess accounts and Android Beam. You get all that and more inside Lollipop so get downloading when possible!

Yes, the newer 5.0.1 Lollipop is already out for many devices. However, it comes with mainly bug fixes and not many features. Everything from the original is still the latest Android you can run on any smartphone or tablet. What’s more, the bugs are minor so there’s nothing to worry about. It is still an official build and stable enough for your daily phone.

As you likely know, all OTA’s arrive in stages to owners. That means you might be lucky enough to already have the software update ready or you may be waiting until next week. Nobody knows the sequence to guess when it’s coming and there’s no special button trick you can do to make it come quicker.

Furthermore, you should try to install the file using a stable WiFi connection and avoid the mobile data plan. The total file size of the LRX21R update is over 500 MB. That means it’s using a whole heap of your data allowance unless you jump on WiFi. Moreover, you are skipping the unwanted data charges for when you go over the limit, depending on your plan.

Those preferring to air things on the side of caution can backup the data before choosing to accept the installation. You can do that by tapping Apps > Settings > Personal > Backup and Reset. Now tap the LG backup service, followed by restore and management. Tap the contacts backup > Next > Start for the backing up to begin.

As usual, we love hearing your take on proceedings. Are you running the latest Lollipop version already? Do you like the design and features or were you expecting more? let us know your opinions below!
