If you have lost access to the root on your T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 5 due to the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update, then you can now regain access to the root by flashing TWRP recovery and a custom kernel on your phone.
Does that excite you (again!)? If so, here’s how you can go about doing that:
Files You Need
- This tutorial should be able to root the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 running on the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
- This will flash a custom kernel on your phone in order to achieve access to the root.
- This tutorial should only work on the computers that run Windows as the tool that you are going to use is Windows only.
- This should also flash a custom recovery called TWRP on your phone.
- Make sure that Samsung USB drivers are installed on your Windows computer. If they are not, install them first.
- Download Odin to your computer. It should help you flash your phone.
- Download Custom Kernel to your computer. It is the custom kernel that will be flashed on your phone.
- Download TWRP Recovery to your computer. It is the custom recovery that will be flashed on your phone.
- Download SuperSU to your computer. It should gain root access on the phone.
- You should only try this on the SM-N920T variant of the phone.
Rooting the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 5 running on Android 6.0 Marshmallow
- Extract files from Odin over to your computer by right-clicking on it and selecting Extract here.
- Launch Odin by double-clicking on its executable file.
- When Odin launches, click the PDA option and select the Custom Kernel available on your computer.
- Make sure that Repartition and Auto Reboot options are unchecked in the Odin.
- Turn off your phone.
- Turn your phone back on in download mode. To do that, hold down Volume DOWN, Home, and Power buttons together.
- Confirm the prompt by pressing Volume UP and your phone should be in download mode.
- Plug in your phone to your computer using a suitable USB cable.
- Click on Start in the Odin and it will start flashing the custom kernel on your phone.
- Wait for Odin to finish flashing the kernel.
- When Odin’s done flashing kernel, close Odin but let your phone stay connected to your computer in download mode.
- Re-launch Odin by double-clicking on its executable file.
- When Odin re-launches, click the PDA option and this time choose the TWRP recovery available on your computer.
- Ensure that the Repartition option is unchecked and the Auto Reboot option is checkmarked.
- Click on Start and the Odin should begin flashing the recovery on your phone.
- When Odin’s done flashing recovery, your phone should automatically reboot.
- When your phone reboots, copy SuperSU .zip from your computer over to the internal storage on your phone.
- When SuperSU is copied, unplug your phone from your computer.
- Turn off your phone.
- Turn your phone back on in recovery mode. To do that, hold down Volume UP, Home, and Power buttons at the same time.
- Your phone should now be in TWRP Recovery mode.
- In the recovery, tap the option that says Install.
- Select SuperSU .zip to be installed on your phone.
- Confirm the prompt by tapping Swipe to Confirm Flash.
- Wait for TWRP to install SuperSU on your phone.
- When TWRP’s done installing SuperSU, reboot your phone by selecting Reboot followed by System.
- Your phone should reboot.
- You should now be fully rooted!
And there you go!
You have successfully rooted your T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 5 running on the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow version. To confirm proper root-access, you can use the Root Checker app that is available for free on the Google Play store.
