If you have lost access to the root on your T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 5 due to the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update, then you can now regain access to the root by flashing TWRP recovery and a custom kernel on your phone.

Does that excite you (again!)? If so, here’s how you can go about doing that:

Files You Need

  1. This tutorial should be able to root the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 running on the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
  2. This will flash a custom kernel on your phone in order to achieve access to the root.
  3. This tutorial should only work on the computers that run Windows as the tool that you are going to use is Windows only.
  4. This should also flash a custom recovery called TWRP on your phone.
  5. Make sure that Samsung USB drivers are installed on your Windows computer. If they are not, install them first.
  6. Download Odin to your computer. It should help you flash your phone.
  7. Download Custom Kernel to your computer. It is the custom kernel that will be flashed on your phone.
  8. Download TWRP Recovery to your computer. It is the custom recovery that will be flashed on your phone.
  9. Download SuperSU to your computer. It should gain root access on the phone.
  10. You should only try this on the SM-N920T variant of the phone.

Rooting the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 5 running on Android 6.0 Marshmallow

  1. Extract files from Odin over to your computer by right-clicking on it and selecting Extract here.
  2. Launch Odin by double-clicking on its executable file.
  3. When Odin launches, click the PDA option and select the Custom Kernel available on your computer.
  4. Make sure that Repartition and Auto Reboot options are unchecked in the Odin.
  5. Turn off your phone.
  6. Turn your phone back on in download mode. To do that, hold down Volume DOWN, Home, and Power buttons together.
  7. Confirm the prompt by pressing Volume UP and your phone should be in download mode.
  8. Plug in your phone to your computer using a suitable USB cable.
  9. Click on Start in the Odin and it will start flashing the custom kernel on your phone.
  10. Wait for Odin to finish flashing the kernel.
  11. When Odin’s done flashing kernel, close Odin but let your phone stay connected to your computer in download mode.
  12. Re-launch Odin by double-clicking on its executable file.
  13. When Odin re-launches, click the PDA option and this time choose the TWRP recovery available on your computer.
  14. Ensure that the Repartition option is unchecked and the Auto Reboot option is checkmarked.
  15. Click on Start and the Odin should begin flashing the recovery on your phone.
  16. When Odin’s done flashing recovery, your phone should automatically reboot.
  17. When your phone reboots, copy SuperSU .zip from your computer over to the internal storage on your phone.
  18. When SuperSU is copied, unplug your phone from your computer.
  19. Turn off your phone.
  20. Turn your phone back on in recovery mode. To do that, hold down Volume UP, Home, and Power buttons at the same time.
  21. Your phone should now be in TWRP Recovery mode.
  22. In the recovery, tap the option that says Install.
  23. Select SuperSU .zip to be installed on your phone.
  24. Confirm the prompt by tapping Swipe to Confirm Flash.
  25. Wait for TWRP to install SuperSU on your phone.
  26. When TWRP’s done installing SuperSU, reboot your phone by selecting Reboot followed by System.
  27. Your phone should reboot.
  28. You should now be fully rooted!

And there you go!

You have successfully rooted your T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 5 running on the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow version. To confirm proper root-access, you can use the Root Checker app that is available for free on the Google Play store.
