An unofficial VLC for Android is now available for download. The VLC media player is a favorite amongst desktop users due to the fact it is free to use, but also because it can be used in conjunction with most kinds of media files, runs on multiple platforms and doesn’t use a lot of system resources.

The App store had its turn with an iOS version, but the media player App was removed last year. It hasn’t been until today that we have seen the first glimpse of what the Android compatible version of the media player will be like. Although you cant expect the VLC player to release its official version for some time to the Android market, you can now download the unofficial VLC App for Android.

The build has been put together on XDA-Developers by a developer that goes by the name of adridu59. It comes complete with support for a majority of media formats, headset detection, hardware acceleration (although at this stage slightly buggy) and works on both Gingerbread and Ice Cream Sandwich.

When launched, the VLC App will scan either individual folders or your whole library (depending on how you have set it up) for playable media files. The Unofficial App is currently free, and its APK can be downloaded Here.

The VLC APK is compatible with the following chips:

  • Snapdragon S1/S2/S3.
  • Tegra 2.
  • Hummingbird.

Please ensure you download the correct version as there are different builds for each one.
