The Sony Xperia Z is about to receive a brand new firmware, namely 10.5.1.A.0.283 as it has just passed through the PTCRB website. That means it has passed the test and is officially granted certification to go ahead. From this stage we will begin to start seeing it arrive OTA as a notification for handset owners over the coming weeks.

The new firmware build is awarded for the Xperia Z, ZR, ZL and the tablet z so we know this is a big update. If it were a smaller update aimed at fixing small bugs it likely would not be issued for all devices at once. Furthermore, it is the final stage of KitKat that the owners of the Xperia Z are waiting to see for some time now. It was only a matter of time before that date finally comes around.

Take everything that you hear with a grain of salt until we see the first official smartphone or tablet with the new software update fully installed because until then we will not know for sure what this carries. The only option is to visit the ‘About Device’ menu from the Settings and view the details.

Our friends tell us that Australia’s largest phone carrier Telstra confirmed that 4.4.4 is coming to the same handset shortly, so that news has people wondering whether this is it. As you may know. The Aussies are not usually the first people to receive software first.

If you are one of the first to discover the update come in as a system update message in the notifications drawer, choose the “Download” option, followed by “Install Now.” If you opt to install it later on because you are away from the stable WiFi connection at the time of the notification, simply navigate to Settings > About phone > Software updates > Check now and the new software will show itself.

Owners have already had the pleasure of experiencing a new Location menu, color emoji support, transparent status and navigation bars, cloud printing, white status bar icons, immersive mode, album art from the lock screen and more from the early stages of the chocolate build. The final stages are brought in to help relieve bugs and security holes.

We predict to find stability improvements, bug fixes and a number of camera improvements and enhancements.
