Many hold the Nexus name higher than any other in the smartphone world. While in reality that may be too high even for our liking, it just goes to show how much of a broad following they have. The main reason for the love stems from the Mountain View company looking after them so well. Because the smartphones are owned by Google, they deliberately make them unbelievable value for money so that they are popular. In addition, they always make them the first handsets to get the Android software treatment when it is ready.

Nonetheless, despite all that, there were strong rumors suggesting that the Googleplex team were planning on killing the Nexus name off and going in a different direction called the Android Silver project. Since then we have backed off and waited for the right time until some sense is made and today is that day according to new reports.

Nexus 6 Killer Whale

The Nexus 6 is on its way our sources tell us and it’s looking like becoming a November release or launch date at this stage. Moreover, it is made by Motorola this time and codenamed ‘Shamu.’

The new smartphone will come with a 5.9-inch or 5.5-inch display, 1440 x 2560 pixels screen resolution, 534 ppi pixel density, a multi-touch touchscreen, light sensor and proximity sensor. The interesting part here is the two different display sizes. It has long been rumored that it would come in with mid 5’s until now. However, we are starting to hear reports of it being more around the 6-inch mark as we head further into the next generation of phones where they continue to grow.

Furthermore, the hardware is packing a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 system chip, Quad core, 2700 MHz, Krait 450 processor, Adreno 420 graphics processor and 3072 MB RAM system memory.

As you can see, the list of specs are impressive and would rival the flagships of any manufacturer smartphones if it were to come out today. As it stands, even with the November timetable it is looking like being the top-shelf mid-range device.

In like manner, it will come with all the usual connectivity features including USB 2.0, MicroUSB, Mass Storage device and USB charging.

Two parts we are yet to see any news on are the camera specs and the internal storage space. The main part where the Nexus range has the most room for growth is the continual lack of a MicroSD card slot for additional space that so many people need. For many that will make or break them even with the stellar specs in other areas.

Interestingly, the name Shamu derives from the Killer Wale who was the first to stay alive for 13 months in a San Diego Sea World display. It was on the show during the 1960’s.
