Installing CWM Recovery on the Google Nexus 5 running on Android 6.0 Marshmallow

  1. Start by installing your ADB Driver on the computer.
  2. Now set up the ADB on your Windows operating system Linux operating system or Mac operating system.
  3. Download and extract the CWM Recovery file on the desktop and then move the file over to the same folder as the ADB so you have it all in the same directory.
  4. From within the ADB and CWM folder, hold the Shift key and right-click where there is no file and a new menu will pop up on the screen.
  5. Choose to be opening a new command prompt window from that menu.
  6. Unlock your hidden Developer Options menu by tapping on the Menu > Settings > About Device > Tap the build number seven or so times and it will tell you that you are now using the device as a developer. Now you can get access to the Developer Options menu.
  7. Enable the USB Debugging Mode on your Nexus 5 smartphone by tapping on the Menu > Settings > Developer Options > USB Debugging Mode.
  8. Leave the command prompt window open and boot the Nexus 5 in bootloader mode by pressing the Volume Down + Power buttons after you turn it on.
  9. Connect your Google Nexus 5 smartphone to the computer using the USB cable.
  10. Type the following command in the command prompt and press the Enter / Return key: fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.4.5-hammerhead.img
  11. That ClockworkMod recovery is now flashed on your Nexus 5 smartphone.

Your Google Nexus 5 stock recovery is now permanently replaced with a custom recovery until you flash the stock recovery back over the top. That means every time you turn your device on and off again, the CWM will still be there.
