A custom recovery is a third-party environment that’s made by developer who have nothing to do with the Google company. The stock recovery that automatically comes installed on your device is made by Google. While it doesn’t sound appealing to install something that isn’t made by Google, the reason people do it is thanks to the new features you get from a custom recovery.

ClockworkMod recovery can create and restore backups (NANDroid backups) far easier than any other backup options you have. Normally you have to choose from apps like Helium in the Google Play Store or use whatever backing up features comes native on your device. None of those options give you a complete and full backup. The only way to do a full backup of your Android system is by using adb commands but that requires typing in commands from the command line using a computer.  In addition to taking backups better, CWM recovery is great thanks to the ROM manager you get. With the ROM manager you can easily install custom ROMs thanks to the file manager.

The Files You Need

  1. Download the ROM manager from the Google Play Store link found on this page.
  2. You can only follow this guide for installing a custom recovery if you have already rooted the Commtiva 71 smartphone.
  3. Installing a custom recovery does void any warranty agreements. Furthermore, it replaces the stock recovery with a new CWM recovery made by third-party developers.

Installing a Custom Recovery on the Commtiva Z71

  1. Download the ROM manager directly to your Commtiva device.
  2. Wait for the application to finish loading and then tap to open it from your app drawer.
  3. Tap your finger over the button which says “Flash ClockworkMod recovery” and it will now flash on your device. CWM is of course short for ClockworkMod recovery.
  4. Follow a small amount of instructions on the devices display to finish the guide.
  5. Now that your device has removed the stock recovery and is running a custom recovery, you need to boot your device into that new recovery mode to use it. You can read how to boot locked and rooted Android devices recovery mode and learn how that’s done.
