If you Motorola Moto G isn’t acting the way it normally should, you can try fixing that by accessing the recovery mode. Once you are in the recovery mode on your Moto G, you can apply a hard reset, wipe the cache partition, or apply software updates. Many of the times we have a problem with the Android OS, we should apply a software update. You don’t need to get access to the recovery mode to find the software update option. You will usually find where to update the Motorola devices by heading to the Settings > About Device > Software > Check for software updates. Once the software update is applied, your device automatically boots in the recovery mode to get that job done. However, should the software update not fix your problem, you can enter recovery mode and apply a factory reset.

The recovery mode on the original Motorola devices, including the Motorola Moto X, Moto G and Moto E first generation all are difficult to boot in the recovery mode. They made this process easier for the 2015 models so you no longer have to go to such great lengths to get your smartphone in the recovery mode.

Entering Recovery Mode On The Motorola Moto G

  1. The first step is to completely power off the smartphone. You can do that one of two ways.
  2. The quickest is to quickly press the power button and then select the ‘Power Off’ button. If your screen is not responding, or it is frozen, you can press and hold the Power key for 10 seconds to make sure the device is all the way off.
  3. Leave the handset for a few seconds before going to the next button sequence.
  4. Press and hold the Power + Volume Up + Volume Down keys at the same time and keep pressing them until you read the next step.
  5. Once you see the Motorola boot menu, you can let go of the keys.
  6. Scroll down the list with the Volume Down button.
  7. Select the option you want to enter by using the Volume Up button. Traditionally it’s the Power button that normally confirms commands, but it’s the Volume Up button here.
  8. Once you select the Recovery option from the menu, wait until you see the Android boot logo.
  9. Hold both of the Volume keys for 5 seconds. That’s both Volume Up + Volume Down together.
  10. Once the 5 seconds are up, press the Power button just once and fast like a normal button press.
  11. Once you let go of the Power button, it should boot the Moto G in the recovery mode.
  12. Now you can use the same Volume buttons to select and confirm what you want done within the recovery mode.

Once you are finished applying your reset or wipe, press the ‘Reboot System Now’ option and you will boot the device back in the normal OS mode.
