The LG G2 is our favorite phone from LG, so it makes us happy to hear that there will be an LG G2 Mini. Not only is it coming, but the launch date will be March so it’s already well in the works.
Mini phones don’t just come smaller in stature, but they also have less specs. With that news, don’t expect much to talk about with the smaller version of the G2. It has a 4.7-inch display 540×960 pixels resolution screen and with 234 PPI it doesn’t leave much to be desired. That’s really low resolution, even for a budget version of this phone. You might think a smaller phone doesn’t need a big resolution, but stop and think that this is a 4.7 inch screen. That’s not exactly small at all. In fact, it’s still considerably bigger than today’s iPhone. For processing power it has a Snapdragon 400 under the hood. That sounds lackluster when you consider than the top of the range are running a Snapdragon 800 processor, which is soon to be boosted to 805 by June, but 400 is standard for a watered down version of a phone so there’s no problems there. What doesn’t help the “Life’s Good” company is that it was rumored to be coming with a Snapdragon 800 SoC and 2GB of RAM instead. So even with the processor, if you were keeping up with the news, you would be disappointed in the result.
The good news is that the small G2 will be running Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box. Helping this along the way was the full-sized G2 Smartphone starting to receive Android 4.4 before Christmas in December. Because it was such a great handset, receiving the KitKat was justified when, even though many other good handsets are still waiting on it. With the original G2 having it for a several months already it was hard to give the smaller version anything but the same treatment to give customers something to be happy about.
Something all shoppers need to note is that it comes in two different camera versions. One of them will be an LATAM 13MP camera, and the version will come with the LTE/3G phone that is only an 8MP camera.
The G2 Mini will be unveiled on February 24, the same day that Samsung is launching the Galaxy S5. Earlier in February, LG released a teaser image (featured above) which gave the impression that this handset would be targeted to women. The reason I say that is the photography was black, white and pink. The pink was the color used to make things stand out. The subjects included in those images were a ladies sized shoe and a starfish, hardly masculine topics to cover. That’s understandable too, because women usually like smaller things, and they are also generally smaller than men. Is LG releasing out low-range specs, assuming that most people buying the new Smartphone are girls? We will have to wait and see the answer.
